Public University System (APUS) is an American university, for-profit, online learning institution, which is composed of the American Military University
(AMU) and the American Public University
(APUS). APUS is entirely owned by the
American Public Education, Inc., a freely traded private-sector conglomerate
(NASDAQ: APEI).

Public University System (APUS) was established in 1991 by Major James
P. Etter (USMC, retired) as the American Military University(AMU). Process began in
January, 1993 with the enrollment of eighteen graduate students.
At
the starting time, the core goal of the American Public University System
(APUS) was to meet the exclusive
learning needs of armed personnel needing courses in particular areas, such as the counter terrorism and the military intelligence, that were not integrated
